Powering cities of the future with Customized Energy Systems in Saudi Arabia

At NEOM, a newly constructed city in western Saudi Arabia, Customized Energy Systems (formerly known as E-Ateps) supplied the biggest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Saudi Arabia, at the time of installation. These batteries assists in making ‘The Line’ the greenest city in the world. It comprises eight 40ft containers filled with batteries, inverters and control infrastructure, each capable of storing the energy generated by ten thousands of PV (solar) modules on the roof of a bus and car parking area, and providing energy to over 100 EV chargers in the same parking area. With no utility grid connection present, the BESS system is the heartbeat of the local electricity grid. It is expected that more energy storage systems will be installed along this city to support many different functions, ranging from energy supply to the inhabitants, via lights for the many planned sport-accommodations to more electric transport. This ambitious plan will take 20 years to be completed and many other new technologies will be introduced along the way.
