Optimism in Athens over F-35 purchase - January 9, 2024
Athens is optimistic that concrete steps will be taken in February, at the latest, regarding Greece’s purchase of F-35 fighter jets from the United States. More specifically, a letter of acceptance by the US government of the Greek request is expected in the coming weeks, while the procedures will be set in motion to forward the agreement to US Congress. “All the programming on defense and arms agreements is proceeding normally,” government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said on Monday. Greece to Upgrade M113s Urgently - January 7, 2024
Greece urgently wants to upgrade its M113 APVs, and the defence ministry sent an RfP to Israel. According to Greek Defence Point’s exclusive information, the Greek side has sent a letter to SIBAT asking to take place at the M113 Armoured Personnel Carrier (APV) upgrade program. Greece wants this service as an “interim solution”. International Defence Cooperation Directorate of Israel (SIBAT) reportedly forwarded the request to Israeli defence industry companies Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) Rafael Systems and Elbit, stating they should send the information to the Greek. Hellenic Navy Expects Three MH-60R ASW in February - January 6, 2023
Hellenic Navy expects three MH-60R Sikorsky helicopters to arrive in February at the latest. According to the Greek defence publication Defence Review’s article by Anastasios Papandreou, these helicopters belong essentially to the option of the original four helicopters to be delivered first because they belong to the American order that precedes it in time, original Greek. Greece has S-70B Aegean hawk helicopters equipped with two types of hopper sonars. The eight helicopters procured between 1991 and 1998 feature Bendix Oceanics’ AN/AQS-18(V)3 submersible passive/active sonar. Read more

Greece Starts R&D on Defence Industry - January 1, 2024 - Greek Defence Ministry states that the Hellenic Centre for Defence Research and Innovation Development will be established. 
Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias wrote an article underlining Greek Defence in 2024. The minister calls 2024 a year of transformation for the Greek Defence industry. The Hellenic Centre for Defence Research and Innovation Development will be established, and the Centre will focus on mobilising resources and international collaborations to advance research and technology development. The effort to restructure the Greek Aviation Industry will be the focus point. Read more

Acquisition of frigates on track - January 5, 2024 
The delivery of three new Belharra-class frigates to the Hellenic Navy that will vastly enhance the country’s defensive capabilities at sea is reportedly on track and within the envisioned timeframe. Builder Naval Group has released images of the first parts of the second frigate, Nearchos, in the shipyard, marking a significant milestone for the program, which is currently running slightly ahead of schedule. Military procurements in 2024 - January 3, 2024
The Armed Forces’ Unified Medium-Term Development and Modernization Program, which will determine procurement priorities for the next five years, is expected to take shape by the end of March.
